President Trump announced his intention to nominate retired Air Force General David Stilwell as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
The crucial diplomatic post has remained unfilled for over a year, despite ongoing major challenges in the region, including North Korea's nuclear program and escalating trade tensions with China.
Stilwell possesses extensive experience, having served 35 years in the Air Force with proficiency in Korean, Chinese, and some Japanese, and held key roles in Asia, including defense attaché in Beijing.
His nomination requires Senate confirmation but is anticipated to receive broad support from the chamber due to his deep expertise and positive reception from Asia specialists.
