UNEP specially commended Wichien Chinnawong, chief of Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary, for his exceptional courage and integrity.
Chinnawong was honored for leading the arrest of a high-profile group of illegal hunters, including a renowned, wealthy businessman, in February.
His team fearlessly apprehended the suspects and pressed charges, including attempted bribery, despite potential intimidation, in a case involving endangered animals like a black panther.
Thailand also received recognition from UNEP and partners for its significant progress in preventing transboundary environmental crime, notably the conviction of a major wildlife trafficker.
