Australians cast ballots in a pivotal 'climate election,' with climate policy emerging as the defining issue influencing voter choices.
The centre-left Labor party, led by Bill Shorten, is tipped for victory, advocating for increased renewable energy, while Prime Minister Scott Morrison's conservative Liberals prioritize protecting the coal-fueled economy.
Public anger over government inaction on climate change, intensified by recent record floods, wildfires, and droughts, has brought the issue to the forefront, impacting voting even in traditionally conservative regions.
The election is tightly contested, marked by a contentious campaign and a complex preferential voting system, indicating that final results may not be immediately clear after polls close.
