Hong Kong extradition protesters escalate fight in suburbs

24 Sept 20:50 Key points summarised by AI

Tens of thousands of Hong Kong protesters escalated their fight by rallying in the suburb of Sha Tin, driven by abiding anger over the extradition bill and fears of China's tightening grip.
Demonstrators demand the formal withdrawal of the controversial extradition bill, leader Carrie Lam's resignation, an independent inquiry into police actions, and the release of arrested individuals.
Clashes erupted between police and some protesters, as the movement extends beyond the city's financial heart, reflecting deep-seated distrust of Beijing's influence on Hong Kong's guaranteed freedoms.

President Macron condemned widespread rioting and looting during nationwide protests, blaming far-left activists and criminals for the "unrestrained violence" and vowing accountability for those who "sought to bring down the Republic."
Over 2,400 arrests were made as protests against rising living costs and poor school conditions escalated, causing extensive damage to public buildings and businesses in cities like Paris, Limoges (where City Hall burned), Marseille, and Lyon.
The unrest, which organizers hoped would revive the "yellow vest" movement, saw political leaders trade blame, with Macron instructing prefects to protect public buildings and potentially ban future protests to prevent further disorder.
