Hong Kong police make fresh arrests, city braces for further protests

Hong Kong police arrested over 20 people following violent overnight clashes with anti-government protesters, involving tear gas, street fires, and blocked roads.
The city prepares for further large-scale protests on Sunday and a general strike on Monday, aiming to bring transportation and businesses to a halt.
Initially sparked by an extradition bill, the movement has broadened to demand greater democracy and leader Carrie Lam's resignation, marking Hong Kong's most significant political crisis since 1997.
The ongoing demonstrations are severely impacting the city's economy, deterring shoppers and tourists from key commercial districts.

President Macron condemned widespread rioting and looting during nationwide protests, blaming far-left activists and criminals for the "unrestrained violence" and vowing accountability for those who "sought to bring down the Republic."
Over 2,400 arrests were made as protests against rising living costs and poor school conditions escalated, causing extensive damage to public buildings and businesses in cities like Paris, Limoges (where City Hall burned), Marseille, and Lyon.
The unrest, which organizers hoped would revive the "yellow vest" movement, saw political leaders trade blame, with Macron instructing prefects to protect public buildings and potentially ban future protests to prevent further disorder.
