Australia firefighters race to contain blazes as heatwave looms

Firefighters exploit a brief drop in temperatures and rainfall to contain massive bushfires and conduct controlled burns ahead of an impending heatwave.
A new heatwave is forecast by Friday, escalating concerns that two major fires could converge to form an uncontrollable "megablaze."
The ongoing disaster has claimed 25 lives, destroyed over 1,800 homes, and scorched eight million hectares, with smoke visible across South America.
Officials caution against false security, noting that only sustained heavy rainfall can extinguish the widespread blazes, despite a faint hope from a distant tropical cyclone.
