Two elderly former passengers from the coronavirus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship have died after being infected, marking the first fatalities linked to the vessel.
Concerns mounted as hundreds of passengers disembarked after testing negative, prompting questions about the safety of their release into crowded Japanese cities.
A Japanese infectious disease expert sharply criticized the ship's quarantine procedures as "completely chaotic" and inadequate, contrasting with the health ministry's defense of its measures.
Several countries have evacuated their citizens from the ship, implementing an additional 14-day quarantine upon their return home due to ongoing safety concerns.
