Deadly clashes erupted in northeastern New Delhi between Hindus and Muslims, claiming 13 lives and injuring scores, ignited by protests against India's new citizenship law.
The violence escalated during President Donald Trump's visit to India, though he publicly stated he did not discuss the unrest or the controversial citizenship legislation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rival groups engaged in pitched battles, setting ablaze shops, vehicles, and a Muslim shrine, leading to school closures and significant police deployments in affected areas.
The contentious citizenship law provides fast-track naturalization for some foreign-born religious minorities but excludes Muslims, drawing widespread criticism for its discriminatory nature.
