Panic buying of essentials like toilet paper, hand sanitiser, and surgical masks is sweeping the globe due to coronavirus fears, disrupting supply chains and causing social unrest.
Psychologists explain this phenomenon as a mix of herd mentality, over-exposure to news, and a desire for control, with social media amplifying public anxieties.
The intense demand for items, particularly surgical masks, has led to extreme price increases and rationing, despite health organizations not recommending their widespread use for the general public.
Experts recommend that authorities re-establish control over information, implement clear rules, and utilize trusted voices to effectively communicate and calm public fears during times of uncertainty.
