Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) were detained in an early morning raid.
The detentions follow days of escalating tension between the civilian government and the powerful military, which alleged widespread fraud in the recent November election.
This move has intensified fears of a military coup, with key communication lines to the capital reportedly down and state media facing technical issues.
The NLD, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi, secured a landslide victory in the November election, a result the military has challenged despite the election commission's rejection of fraud claims.
