President Biden forecasts "extreme competition" with China under his administration, emphasizing a need to avoid conflict despite the intense rivalry.
Biden has yet to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping since his inauguration, but notes their extensive prior relationship and anticipates a wide-ranging discussion.
The new administration will diverge from Trump's approach, focusing on "international rules of the road" for U.S.-China relations.
Despite a desire for a new relationship, the U.S. is unlikely to alter its firm policies on trade, Taiwan, human rights, and the South China Sea.
