Hopes of rescuing 53 crew members aboard the missing Indonesian submarine, KRI Nanggala 402, faded as its oxygen reserves were believed to have run out early Saturday.
The German-built submarine disappeared Wednesday during live torpedo training exercises off Bali, prompting a frantic international search operation.
An oil spill spotted near the submarine's last known location points to potential fuel-tank damage, raising concerns the vessel may have broken apart at depths exceeding its operational limits.
