US authorities foiled an assassination plot against UN Ambassador to Myanmar Kyaw Moe Tun, arresting two men, Phyo Hein Htut and Ye Hein Zaw, on charges of conspiring to cause bodily harm.
The scheme allegedly involved an arms dealer in Thailand with links to the Myanmar military, who provided a down payment for the plot, which included tampering with the ambassador's car to cause an accident, with more lethal action if necessary.
The plot was uncovered when Phyo Hein Htut, who had been volunteering for the ambassador's security, revealed the plans to the FBI, leading to the arrests and a strong condemnation from the United States against such authoritarian tactics.
