Chulalongkorn University's Student Union unanimously canceled the traditional Phra Kieo coronet procession, deeming it a symbol of feudal culture and inequality.
The union stated the decades-long tradition, featuring a female student on a palanquin carried by male students, is outdated and contradicts principles of democracy, equality, and human rights.
Concerns were raised over the non-transparent selection of the female student, reflecting elite beauty standards, and allegations of male students being forced to participate for university residence rights.
