Thai authorities are actively searching for a Nigerian man, confirmed as Thailand's first monkeypox case, who disappeared from his Phuket hotel after refusing hospital treatment.
The 27-year-old man, whose visa has expired, turned off his cell phone after being informed of his positive test results and is known to have frequented night spots and engaged in sexual activity.
Contact tracing efforts are underway, with two high-risk friends quarantined (testing negative initially) and 142 individuals from visited nightspots being monitored, some with mild symptoms.
Thailand has implemented comprehensive monkeypox preventive measures, including screening at medical facilities and airports, isolation for suspected cases, and symptom monitoring for high-risk contacts.
