Trump launches 2024 U.S. presidential run, getting jump on rivals

13 Sept 03:35 Key points summarised by AI

Donald Trump officially launched his 2024 U.S. presidential campaign from his Mar-a-Lago estate, aiming to pre-empt potential Republican rivals.
The announcement, made a week after disappointing midterm election results for Republicans, signals Trump's intent to deter other hopefuls like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump enters the race facing multiple legal challenges, including a criminal investigation over government documents and a congressional subpoena related to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
Despite his active role in the midterms, many of his endorsed candidates lost, leading to criticism from within his party and highlighting a complex political landscape for his bid.

President Macron condemned widespread rioting and looting during nationwide protests, blaming far-left activists and criminals for the "unrestrained violence" and vowing accountability for those who "sought to bring down the Republic."
Over 2,400 arrests were made as protests against rising living costs and poor school conditions escalated, causing extensive damage to public buildings and businesses in cities like Paris, Limoges (where City Hall burned), Marseille, and Lyon.
The unrest, which organizers hoped would revive the "yellow vest" movement, saw political leaders trade blame, with Macron instructing prefects to protect public buildings and potentially ban future protests to prevent further disorder.
