China's balloon over the U.S. seen as bold but clumsy espionage tactic

13 Sept 09:52 Key points summarised by AI

China's suspected surveillance balloon over the U.S. is viewed by security experts as a surprisingly aggressive and puzzling new espionage tactic, distinct from traditional satellite surveillance or intellectual property theft.
While China claims the balloon was for civilian meteorological purposes that accidentally strayed, U.S. officials and experts suggest it could be a deliberate provocation to test American response capabilities.
The incident highlights escalating tensions and China's broader efforts to challenge U.S. military presence and acquire sensitive information, further complicated by the recent sighting of another Chinese balloon over Latin America.

President Macron condemned widespread rioting and looting during nationwide protests, blaming far-left activists and criminals for the "unrestrained violence" and vowing accountability for those who "sought to bring down the Republic."
Over 2,400 arrests were made as protests against rising living costs and poor school conditions escalated, causing extensive damage to public buildings and businesses in cities like Paris, Limoges (where City Hall burned), Marseille, and Lyon.
The unrest, which organizers hoped would revive the "yellow vest" movement, saw political leaders trade blame, with Macron instructing prefects to protect public buildings and potentially ban future protests to prevent further disorder.
