The Customs Department proposes a ban or stricter controls on iron scrap imports, requiring origin certificates to prevent industrial and electronic waste smuggling.
This initiative follows the impoundment of 14 cargo containers at Laem Chabang port, falsely declared as mixed metal, amidst ongoing efforts to return hazardous waste shipments.
Officials face significant challenges in inspecting the rising volume of metal scrap imports due to limitations in X-ray technology and insufficient manpower for thorough checks.
