Throughout the battles and conflicts that South Korea has fought from the past to the present, the people have had “to rise up” as fighters. They have successfully pulled through many crises. But despite the exhaustion experienced together as a nation, there are certain groups that have had to suffer more than others. And these are the country’s women. It's women who have had to work twice as hard. Apart from passing the university entrance examinations, women have to compete over job placements in big companies. They must climb the professional ladder and go in search of suitable life partners, just like everyone else. On top of all that, women feel obligated to work towards removing the problematic social standards that have blocked their path over many hundreds of years. Even in the 21st century, these values of women’s submissiveness are still hard to break free of. In this day and age, if we observe advertisements, media communications, and other visual representations along the streets of Seoul, we will find enormous diversification in the way women are portrayed. Professions in journalism, company administration, and business ownership are among those occupied by the women of this country. It hasn’t been easy for South Korean women as they continue to overcome obstacleseven when images of success shine all the more brilliantly. Join us, as we explore the professions with long-standing traditions that have remained “specifically assigned” to the women of this country.
