- HENAN: THE LAND IN THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY
The Chinese word Zhongguo stands for the Chinese people. Embedded in this word is ‘zhong’, meaning ‘middle’, referring to the “Middle Kingdom” which is the heart of civilization. And Henan in Central China can be likened to the heart of “a mother hen” carrying a young shoot of history. Thousands of years have sailed past. And yet, history has never been forgotten; hence the Chinese saying that “the people of Henan treasure their civilization through the keeping of records and the memories of what their ancestors had built”. So, this has become one of the provinces in which “cultural heritage” is among the best preserved.
But if images of the past are no longer visible, how would one go about nurturing a love for the land in the hearts of the present-day Henan people? Here in this province, the answer may lie in “new models of performing arts” that are being used to reconstruct…”the glory of the past”.
