"แพร่" ดินแดนลับแลที่เต็มไปด้วยทรัพยากรป่าไม้ แร่ธาตุ เป็นเมืองที่ตกอยู่ในวงล้อมของหัวเมืองใหญ่ ในยุคการก่อร่างสร้างอาณาจักรสยาม และอีกหกมหาอำนาจจากนอกประเทศ เช่น อังกฤษ, ฝรั่งเศส, เยอรมัน, เดนมาร์ก, ญี่ปุ่น และอเมริกา ผ่านลำดับเวลาตั้งแต่ยุคล่าอาณานิคม กบฏเงี้ยว ยุคสัมปทานป่าไม้ สงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง การปฏิรูปประเทศครั้งใหญ่ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ได้เปิดเสรีการค้าทวงดุลอำนาจชาติตะวันตก กระทั่งได้มีการสร้างเส้นทางรถไฟสายเหนือ โดยมีวิศวกรชาวเยอรมนีมาฝากผลงานไว้ให้เราได้เห็นจากสถาปัตยกรรมแบบเฟรมเฮาส์ บาวาเรียน สองชั้น (Bavarian Timber Frame House) ของอาคารสถานีรถไฟบ้านปิน อ.ลอง จ.แพร่ ที่ไม่เพียงเป็นแลนด์มาร์กสะกดสายตา จุดเช็กอินของคนรักรถไฟ แต่ยังเต็มไปด้วยความผูกพันระหว่างกันของผู้คนชาว อ.ลอง และต่างถิ่น ที่ล้วนมีภาพจดจำในวันที่รถไฟขบวนแรกมาเทียบชานชาลาที่นี่เมื่อ 100 กว่าปีก่อน
PHRAE : LAND OF THE SEVEN GREAT POWERS
Phrae is a mysterious land with abundant teak forests and mineral resources. Now one of Thailand’s northern provinces, Phrae was once surrounded by larger states. During colonial times, Phrae became Siam’s teak industry mainstay as contentions also grew among the great powers of Great Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Japan, and the United States of America. Throughout the transitions of colonial history, Phrae was among the leading cast of characters during the Shan Rebellion, the forest concessions, and the Second World War.
King Rama V Chulalongkorn issued orders for some radical reforms, which extended to the areas of trade and transportation. The government of Siam undertook a number of major public works projects, most notably the construction of railways linking Bangkok with the distant provinces of the kingdom. Among these projects was the Northern Line, in which German engineers were employed in the railroad’s design and construction. These reforms were regarded as essential if Siam was to maintain her political independence in a period when the rest of the Southeast Asian region had fallen under European colonial rule. Baan Pin Railway Station is located in Long District of Phrae Province. The station’s architectural style is that of the Bavarian timber frame house. Apart from serving as a distinctive landmark, Baan Pin is a symbol of the long-standing relationship between the people of Long District and elsewhere, whose ancestors witnessed and held the memory of the first train approaching this platform over a hundred years ago.
