เรามักเชื่อกันว่าพุทธศาสนาลังกาวงศ์เดินทางเข้าสู่สยามผ่านเส้นทางการค้า หลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์มากมายบอกเราเช่นนั้น ว่าพระพุทธศาสนาจากลังกาได้ข้ามน้ำข้ามทะเลมาถึงนครศรีธรรมราช ผ่านตะกั่วป่า พังงา และสุราษฎร์ธานี ดูเหมือนจะเป็นร่องรอยแรกที่เราสามารถสืบค้นได้
ทว่าหากลองเทียบเคียงกับหลักฐานจากพื้นที่อื่น กลับพบว่าคนสยามรู้จักพุทธศาสนาลังกาวงศ์มาเนิ่นนานแล้ว ย้อนกลับไปถึงสมัยทวารวดี ไม่ใช่แค่เพียงจากเส้นทางการค้าทางทะเล แต่ยังมีอีกเส้นทางหนึ่งที่มักถูกมองข้าม เส้นทางทางบกที่เชื่อมโยงผ่านดินแดนของชาวมอญ
- THE MIGRATION OF BUDDHISM: FROM LANKA TO SIAM
Many aspects of historical evidence point in the direction of “the theory” that Sri Lankan Buddhism travelled to Siam via the trade routes. And among the first pieces of evidence uncovered are those that lead us to believe that Buddhism from Lanka was brought across the seas to Nakhon Si Thammarat, via Takua Pa, Phang Nga and Surat Thani.
But, if we compare this aspect of evidence to other sets of evidence from other zones, we also discover that Siamese people developed familiarity with Lankan Buddhism well before then…all the way back to the Dvaravati period. Apart from the maritime trade route, there is also another route that is often overlooked. And that is “the land route” that interconnects through the Central Region of present-day Thailand.
