What Is the True Situation?

The image circulating online, which claims to show flooding around the Phaya Satta Nagaraj Courtyard in Nakhon Phanom Province that forced people to travel by boat, was generated by AI. The Nakhon Phanom Provincial Public Relations Office confirmed that the image does not depict an actual event.

Meanwhile, information from Thai PBS and local authorities confirmed that Nakhon Phanom Province did experience heavy rainfall and flooding in several areas, particularly within Nakhon Phanom Municipality. However, people were still able to travel normally around the Phaya Satta Nagaraj Courtyard.

Thai PBS Verify traced the source of the fake image to Threads.

A social media post claimed that the image showed flooding around a major landmark in Nakhon Phanom Province, forcing people to use boats to travel.

The post stated:

“The rain just won’t stop falling. It has been pouring all day and all night, causing floods in Nakhon Phanom city. #NakhonPhanomFloods”

The post had received more than 15,978 views and was published on August 9, 2026.

Is the Flooding at the Phaya Satta Nagaraj Courtyard Real?

The image was checked using Google Lens, but no clear source for the image was found. However, examination of the statue shown in the image confirmed that it was the Phaya Satta Nagaraj statue at the Phaya Satta Nagaraj Courtyard in Nakhon Phanom Province.

The image was then checked using an AI-generated image detection tool. The results indicated a 99.9% likelihood that the image was AI-generated.

Information about the flooding situation in Nakhon Phanom Province published by the Nakhon Phanom Provincial Public Relations Office on August 10, 2026, stated:

“The heavy rainfall situation in Nakhon Phanom has eased, and travel has returned to normal. Authorities continue to monitor rainfall and Mekong River water levels.”

The office also published photographs of the area around the Phaya Satta Nagaraj Courtyard, stating that there was no flooding in the area and that people could continue to travel along the roads normally.

Despite this, Nakhon Phanom Province continued to closely monitor the rainfall and Mekong River situation.

Comparison of the Real Scene and the AI-Generated Image

A comparison of images from the actual location and the AI-generated image showed abnormalities in the lettering appearing in the image, which is a characteristic often associated with AI-generated imagery.

In addition, the Nakhon Phanom Provincial Public Relations Office’s Facebook page published a video showing the atmosphere around the Phaya Satta Nagaraj Courtyard on August 10, 2026. The post stated that the heavy rainfall situation had eased and that travel had returned to normal.

The office also confirmed that the circulating image was AI-generated.

The Nakhon Phanom Provincial Public Relations Office further asked members of the public not to post or share false images of flooding in Nakhon Phanom, as they could cause misunderstanding. It also urged people to follow news and information carefully after heavy rainfall and flooding had occurred in some areas, emphasizing the importance of checking information before posting or sharing.

Public Warning About Flooding Information

Nakhon Phanom Province urged residents to carefully follow and obtain information about heavy rainfall and flooding in the area. The province had experienced heavy rainfall, resulting in flooding in some locations. Relevant authorities had accelerated drainage operations and closely monitored the situation.

At the same time, images and information about flooding were being circulated on social media, including images from actual events, images from other periods, and AI-generated images. Such content could lead to misunderstandings about the actual situation in the area.

The provincial authorities urged people to check the date, time, location, and source of images or information before believing, posting, or sharing them. This is particularly important for information about flooding and disasters because conditions can differ from one area to another and can change continuously.

Warning: Sharing Fake News or False Information May Be an Offense

The introduction of false information or fake news into a computer system, including the dissemination or forwarding of information that a person already knows to be false, may constitute an offense under the Computer-Related Crime Act. Whether an act constitutes an offense must be considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the facts and the legal elements of the offense.

In particular, a person who disseminates or forwards information knowing that it constitutes information covered by the law may be held liable under Section 14(5).

In cases involving false information that falls under Section 14(1) and causes harm to the public, the offender may face imprisonment for up to five years, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both. However, whether an offense has been committed depends on the facts and the applicable legal elements in each case.

The Actual Flooding Situation

According to a Thai PBS report published on August 9, 2026, heavy rainfall in Nakhon Phanom Province caused flooding in Nakhon Phanom Municipality. Authorities mobilized water pumps and distributed sandbags to residents to help prevent flooding.

The report stated that a monsoon trough extending across the upper North and upper Laos brought continuous heavy rainfall to Nakhon Phanom Province, particularly in Nakhon Phanom Municipality. Heavy to very heavy rain began at around 5:00 a.m., with the highest recorded rainfall reaching 107.9 millimeters. Na Wa District recorded the lowest rainfall at 10.0 millimeters.

The flooding also affected people’s travel. A large number of cars and motorcycles attempting to drive through the high floodwaters stalled on the roads. Authorities had to assist in moving vehicles and facilitate traffic. Residents in several areas also urgently requested sandbags to place around their homes to prevent floodwater from entering.

On August 10, 2026, the Nakhon Phanom Provincial Public Relations Office warned that the water level of the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom was expected to continue rising and could overflow its banks into low-lying areas between August 10 and 14, 2026. The areas particularly at risk included Mueang Nakhon Phanom, Tha Uthen, That Phanom, and Ban Phaeng districts.
