The image in question is fabricated

Thai PBS Verify conducted a preliminary examination using the following visual analysis methods:

  1. Hands and fingers: The pointing hand of the man on the left exhibits several anatomical irregularities. The length and number of joints in his fingers appear distorted, and the overall positioning of the hand lacks a natural human structure.
  2. Facial features and mouth structures: The mouth movements and expressions of both individuals appear unnatural, lacking the muscle tension and fluidity typical of a real-life reaction.
  3. Background and composition: A close inspection of the ‘People’s Party’ sign reveals that the Thai lettering is blurred and linguistically distorted, showing inconsistencies that deviate from correct Thai typography.

The Economic Party issued a formal statement expressing deep concern over the conduct of a People’s Party MP. The latter is alleged to have approached and threatened the Economic Party member at his seat in the parliamentary chamber, an act involving aggressive gestures and intimidation. The party condemned this behavior as highly inappropriate, warning that it could undermine the professional atmosphere and integrity of the legislative branch.

According to the statement, this conduct contradicts democratic values and the code of ethics for political figures. Furthermore, the party urged for a fair inquiry and demanded that rigorous disciplinary measures be taken in accordance with parliamentary rules.

Furthermore, the Economic Party criticized the debate performances of certain MPs, alleging “the use of AI to generate or read scripts.” They argued that this reliance on technology resulted in a lack of depth and undermined the standards of parliamentary debate. The party also raised questions regarding the preparedness and accountability of these representatives in fulfilling their legislative duties.

The Economic Party reiterated that legislative discourse should be driven by factual accuracy and authentic insight, not by rote reading or an uncritical reliance on technology. While the People’s Party has not yet formally addressed the accusations, the issue is anticipated to be brought up for parliamentary deliberation or further inquiry as the situation develops.

What is the truth?

Thai PBS Verify has found that the post in question used AI-generated imagery to depict the situation. The fabricated image portrays a scene significantly more violent than what occurred in reality. Meanwhile, the Economic Party has issued a statement condemning a People’s Party MP for allegedly approaching and threatening a member in the chamber. The party described this behavior as inappropriate and a breach of political ethics. Furthermore, they criticized certain debate performances for relying on AI-generated scripts, claiming such practices diminish parliamentary standards and demonstrate a lack of professional responsibility.

  2. Comparison with actual footage : A cross-check was conducted against actual footage of the interaction between Pakornwut Udompipatskul (People’s Party) and Chris Potranandana (Economic Party). Potential impacts of the fake image

  1. Misleading the public: The use of AI-generated images presented as authentic footage can deceive the public into believing that acts of violence occurred within Parliament, despite such events having no basis in reality.
  2. Causing reputational damage: The MPs involved may suffer significant character assassination and public backlash based on false premises. Such depictions can lead to a negative public perception of their conduct, even though they never committed the acts portrayed in the fabricated images.
  3. Escalating political conflict: This type of misinformation can incite emotional responses among supporters of different factions, further intensifying heated debates and deep-seated animosity within the political landscape.
  4. Eroding trust in the parliamentary system: The circulation of images depicting harassment or chaos can distort public perception, leading citizens to view Parliament as lacking professionalism and decorum, regardless of whether the events actually occurred.
  5. Complicating fact-checking efforts: As AI-generated images are produced and disseminated at scale, the ability to distinguish between ‘fact’ and ‘fiction’ becomes increasingly difficult. This saturation of synthetic media demands more time and resources for verification, hindering the timely delivery of accurate information.
  6. Leading to risk in political weaponization: Fabricated images can be exploited as tools for political attacks or as instruments to manipulate public opinion and sway voter sentiment against opposing parties.

GuidelinesWhat to do with this misinformation?

  1. Pause before sharing: Avoid forwarding information immediately, especially content designed to provoke strong emotional responses, such as anger, shock, or high-profile drama.
  2. Verify the source: Always check the credibility of the publisher. Ensure the post originates from a reputable media outlet and provides clear, verifiable citations.
  3. Cross-reference with multiple sources: Search for the same keywords across different platforms to see if other mainstream news organizations have reported the same information consistently.
  4. Identify visual irregularities: Look closely for AI-generated anomalies, such as distorted limbs, blurred text, inconsistent lighting, or any visual elements that appear unnatural.
  5. Utilize digital tools: Verify suspicious images by using AI detection websites or performing a reverse image search to find the original context.
  6. Be wary of sensationalist headlines: Exercise caution with “clickbait” titles that use aggressive language or jump to conclusions too quickly, as they are often intended to manipulate public opinion.
