Video claiming Israelis fleeing airport after Iranian bombing found to be U.S. landing gear failure incident

Thai PBS Verify has investigated a video claiming that Israeli passengers were escaping an aircraft following an Iranian bombing of an airport.

The footage actually depicts passengers on an American Airlines flight departing from the Denver International Airport in the U.S., as they were forced to evacuate the plane after the aircraft’s landing gear malfunctioned during takeoff.

Thai PBS Verify found the piece of disinformation from: X

An X account shared a video depicting people escaping an aircraft, claiming that passengers were evacuated following an Iranian attack on an Israeli airport.

Thai PBS Verify identified a post on X sharing a video of people rushing out of a plane. The post included a caption in Hindi that:

आज एक इजरायली हवाई अड्डे पर ईरानी मिसाइल हमले के बाद इज़रायली यात्रियों का निकासी।”

Which could be translated as following:

“Today, Israeli passengers were evacuated following an Iranian missile attack at an airport in Israel.”

As of March 1, 2026, the post has received 10,000 views, 114 reposts, and 493 reactions.

The fleeing at an Israeli airport is not real as claimed

Thai PBS Verify’s team analysed images from the video by using Google Lens. The results matched a news report titled “Passengers flee smoking plane on emergency slides after aborted takeoff in Denver” published on July 28, 2025, by Global News.

Why was the takeoff of an American Airlines flight aborted?

The real incident occurred on July 26, 2025, involving American Airlines Flight 3023, which was scheduled to depart from Denver to Miami. The pilots were forced to abort the takeoff while on the runway due to a critical failure in the wheelbase system. The technical error resulted in thick smoke and flames erupting from beneath the aircraft. Following a high-speed emergency braking maneuver that brought the plane to a complete halt, dense smoke began to envelop the fuselage. The crew immediately ordered the evacuation of all 173 passengers and six crew members via emergency slides onto the runway.

Regarding the situation, one passenger was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, while five others received on-site first aid. Preliminary findings from the airline indicated that the fire was caused by an issue with the tires or the wheelbase system, which led to extreme overheating and subsequent combustion.

What is the current situation of the U.S.-Iran conflict?

The United States and Israel have launched a new wave of airstrikes across Iran on the second day of a military operation aimed at regime change, following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a previous aerial assault. President Donald Trump has warned of using “unprecedented” force should Tehran choose to retaliate. Meanwhile, the strikes and missile fire have caused damage to infrastructure, major cities, and regional airports, while also posing a threat to the Strait of Hormuz, which could severely impact the global economy. The Iranian leader has vowed to persevere and strike back. Concurrently, the international community remains deeply concerned that the situation could escalate into a prolonged regional war. Although both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump have called upon the Iranian people to revolt against their government, there is currently no clarity on when this conflict might conclude.

What is the truth?

Thai PBS Verify has confirmed that the footage in question depicts American Airlines Flight 3023, which was scheduled to depart from Denver to Miami. The aircraft was forced to abort the takeoff while on the runway. It is not related to any military conflict between Iran and the United States.

Impacts of disinformation

  1. Inciting panic and fear: This creates widespread anxiety regarding global aviation safety. This often leads to tourists or business travelers unnecessarily canceling trips on related flight routes.
  2. Political provocation: Misinformation can be weaponized as propaganda to incite hatred or to manufacture legitimacy for a particular side to escalate violent retaliation.

Recommended Response

  1. Apply the “Stop, Think and Verify” principle: When you encounter videos that seem overly sensational or terrifying, refrain from sharing them immediately. Strong emotions can impair our judgment and impulse control. Always evaluate whether the source is a credible mainstream media outlet or merely an anonymous social media account. Additionally, try searching for keywords or frames from suspicious content with Google or other Reverse Image Search tools to determine if the footage is repurposed from a past event.
  2. Look for abnormalities in the video: Pay close attention to specific details such as road signs, the language used on placards, people’s attire or even the weather conditions. Check if these elements align with the geographical location or region mentioned in the claim.
  3. Understand the “tactics” of fake news creators: Be aware that during times of conflict, creators often use the “old footage, new story” tactic or even footage from “war games” (simulators) to claim they are real-time events. This is typically done to generate views (clickbait) or to serve specific political agendas (propaganda).
