- THE POWER OF SPIRITUAL MERIT THAT RESOLVES CRISES IN SRI LANKA
It has been 441 years since many groups of foreigners began alternating in their rulership over Sri Lanka. The Portuguese governed Sri Lanka for 152 years, the Dutch for 137 years, and the British for 152 years. Sri Lanka’s Independence Day was on 4 February 1948, the day when Ceylon became the Dominion of Ceylon, following an independence movement designed to break away from the British Empire. 77 years have passed since the transfer of power from the British administration to Ceylon representatives. Sri Lanka has had a Parliament and positions of prime minister held by the country’s own people. To the outside world, Sri Lanka is known as a large center of Buddhism. It is also one of the largest exporters of tea, and home to the Ceylon Tea, which is prized for its superior quality. Sri Lanka has retained its position as the ‘Best in Class’ producer of Quality Tea, and considered by the Technical Committee of the ISO as the producer of “the cleanest tea in the world”. And yet, there was a time when a terrible economic crisis hit Sri Lanka in a way the nation had never before experienced. The country has been putting forward policies to restore the economic situation step-by-step. While the process has been slow, it’s this slowness that has allowed the people to “focus on self-sufficiency”. Buddhism continues to be supported as far as “the ways and means” of followers will allow. And despite the alarming state of the economy, the Buddhist faith remains “a constant principle” that uplifts and nurtures…the hearts of the Sri Lankan people.
