Thai PBS Verify has confirmed the ongoing first phase of the Thai-Cambodian border fence in Chanthaburi province, while checkpoints remain closed for security.

Thai PBS Verify found the news report on: Facebook

The Facebook post in question.

A Facebook page, ‘จันทบุรี แจ้งข่าว (transliterated as Chanthaburi Chaeng Khao, or Chanthaburi News Alert)’, shared photos of the border wall with the caption: #ThaiCambodianBorderFence: Unveiling the border fence near boundary pillars 52-54 in Pong Nam Ron District, Chanthaburi.”

The rest of the caption reads:

“On May 11, 2026, viral photos showed border fence construction near boundary pillars 52–54 in Moo 4, Thep Nimit, Chanthaburi. The 1,310-meter stretch features flat terrain, a clearly defined border, and parallel patrol roads on both the Thai and Cambodian sides.

“Overseen by the Royal Thai Armed Forces since late April 2026, the project is set for a 45-day completion. The 170-cm-tall robust fence integrates solid concrete piling and steel-mesh precast slabs to enhance stability and border patrol efficiency.

“Carried out entirely within Thai sovereignty, the construction aligns with the internationally recognized border accepted by both nations. The project aims to prevent illegal immigration and smuggling, bolster local public safety, and support border patrol operations.

“The Thai-Cambodian land border stretches approximately 798 kilometers across seven provinces: Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat.”

Thai Army’s border fence in Chanthaburi reaches 20% completion

A May 12, 2026 report by Thai PBS, headlined “รั้วคอนกรีต-ปิดด่านถาวร” กำแพงชายแดนกั้นสัมพันธ์ “ไทย-เขมร (Concrete Fence – Permanent Checkpoint Closure: A Border Wall Dividing Thai-Khmer Relations),” confirmed the project is a legitimate Thai military initiative.

Initiated in April 2026, the construction covers a 1.3-kilometer stretch between boundary pillars 52–54, with plans to extend to pillar 59, totaling roughly 8 kilometers. This comes as several provincial border checkpoints remain permanently closed following the 2025 clashes.

However, diverse geography complicates building a permanent fence along the 700-km border. The reinforced concrete wall and adjacent patrol road aim to curb illegal crossings and boost security, though the government has no immediate plans to reopen checkpoints or resume border discussions.

Thai PBS Verify also contacted Mr. Sakchai Yoosuksawat, a Thai PBS local reporter in Chanthaburi, and he confirmed that the wall construction in the district was complete, with border checkpoints still closed.
