Cambodian Media Publishes False Report of Bomb Attack in Narathiwat, Old Photos Misused

Thai PBS Verify has identified a false report circulating on Facebook from a Cambodian news outlet. The post showed an old photo of a destroyed residence, falsely described as the aftermath of an insurgent attack on a factory in Narathiwat. Verification confirmed the image was reused from past events and the claim is untrue.

Source of the false report is from Facebook

A Cambodian outlet, Fresh News TV, posted a video on 18 August 2025 with the caption in Khmer: “Southern Thai rebels launched a bomb attack on a factory in Narathiwat.” The post was accompanied by an image of a damaged building. Google Lens checks revealed the image was from a car bomb attack on a police apartment in Narathiwat municipality on 22 November 2022.

Screenshot shows the image matches the 2022 car bomb at the Narathiwat police apartment.

Further comparison with Google Maps confirmed the building in the photo was indeed the police apartment on Suriyapradit Road, Narathiwat municipality, not a factory as claimed.

Narathiwat attack differs from misleading images

The real incident in Narathiwat was different. According to Tichila Phutthasaraphan, head of Thai PBS’s Southern News Center, on the night of 15 August 2025, more than ten armed men attacked a biomass power plant owned by Fire’s of Wood Green Energy Co., Ltd., located at 43–44 Ban Sala Uma, Moo 9, KayuKla Subdistrict, Waeng Distric. They set fire to a backhoe and a six-wheel truck parked inside the compound, and three explosions were heard before the attackers fled. The misleading image had nothing to do with this event; it was spliced from older, unrelated incidents.

Verification Process

  • Google Lens confirmed the photo came from the 2022 car bomb at Narathiwat police apartment.
  • Google Maps comparisons matched the building in the image to the police apartment, not a factory.
  • Thai PBS cross-checked with its head of Southern News Center, which confirmed the actual event involved arson and small explosions, not a car bomb.

Impact of false claim

  • Distorts reality, giving the impression that Thailand faced a more severe bombing.
  • Undermines national security and risks damaging relations with neighboring countries that might believe the claim.
  • Spreads panic in the Deep South, distracting from accurate reporting of real incidents.

Recommended Response

  • Always check the source. If it comes from unofficial pages or outlets known for misleading stories, treat it with caution.
  • Use reverse image search tools like Google Lens to see if photos are recycled.
  • Compare with trusted news outlets or local authorities for confirmation.
  • Do not share unverified posts. Spreading them only amplifies the damage of false information.
