Online hoax on UN voting to label President Trump as international criminal

Thai PBS Verify has identified a viral claim that the United Nations (UN) held a vote resulting in a 12-3 decision to designate President Donald Trump as an international criminal. After an examination, it is confirmed that this claim is false, as no such vote has ever taken place within any UN councils or bodies.

Thai PBS Verify found the piece of malinformation on: Threads

A Threads user made a viral post claiming that the U.S. President Donald Trump was designated an international criminal by a 12-3 vote of the United Nations.

A Threads user made a viral post claiming that the U.S. President Donald Trump was designated an international criminal by a 12-3 vote of the United Nations.

Thai PBS Verify identified the malinformation on Threads, which had originally been published by user ‘janewilcox480’ on March 9, 2026.

The post features the headline: “UN Votes 12-3: Trump is an International Criminal.”

The post has garnered over 31,000 likes, 2,200 reposts, 713 shares, and more than 1,100 comments. Analysis of the engagement shows that most commenters believed the report was true, with many calling for the arrest of President Trump. However, a segment of the audience expressed skepticism, noting that the information is likely fake news.

The UN never voted to label President Trump a criminal

Thai PBS Verify conducted a keyword search on Google. However, no credible news sources were found to support the claims circulated by the Threads user. Furthermore, an investigation of the official United Nations (UN) news website yielded no records of such a vote or announcement.

Google Search results for the specified keywords yield no news reports related to any UN vote.

The closest match to these allegations is a single interview of Mr. Reed Brody with an independent news program, Democracy Now, on March 2, 2026. Below is the core content of that interview.

The United States and Israel launched a devastating war against Iran on Saturday without approval by the U.S. Congress or support by the United Nations Security Council, making President Donald Trump’s attack illegal under both domestic and international law, says veteran war crimes prosecutor Reed Brody

“The U.N. Charter is not ambiguous,” says Brody. “President Trump has presumptively committed … the international crime of aggression, as he did in Venezuela and just as Vladimir Putin did in Ukraine.”

However, the content contains no information or assertions designating President Trump as a war criminal.

How has the UN reported on the situation in Iran?

Furthermore, Thai PBS Verify conducted an extended investigation and found a report on the official United Nations website regarding an attack on a school. The key points are as follows.

The UN has issued an urgent call for the protection of civilians, warning of increasing mass displacement and escalating humanitarian needs. A spokesperson for the UN human rights office addressed a tragic incident involving reports of an attack on an elementary school in Minab, which resulted in numerous student casualties and injuries.

The UN human rights chief expressed profound shock at the devastating impact on civilians and civilian infrastructure, demanding a swift, impartial, and comprehensive investigation into the events in Minab.

Additionally, the UN emphasized that if an attack is found to have intentionally targeted civilians or civilian objects, or was carried out indiscriminately, it would constitute a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law and may amount to war crimes.

What is the truth?

The social media post in question is fake news. The United Nations has never held a 12-3 vote to designate the U.S. President Donald Trump as an international criminal.

Thai PBS Verifiy’s examination reveals that the malinformation stemmed from the distortion of a personal opinion to make it appear as an official resolution.

The closest source of information is an interview with Mr. Reed Brody, a senior war crimes prosecutor, given to Democracy Now on March 2, 2026. In the interview, he expressed his opinion that Trump’s actions against Iran were “illegal” and constituted “implicit international aggression.” However, these statements represent the legal opinion of a single individual and do not constitute a resolution from the UN Security Council or the General Assembly.

Verification Process

  • Consulting official sources: Thai PBS Verify consulted the official archives and press releases on the United Nations (UN) website throughout March 2026. found. No records of any resolutions or meetings regarding war crime charges against President Donald Trump.
  • Keyword search: A search on Google for “UN Votes 12-3 Trump International Criminal” yielded no reports from any major news outlets. A resolution of such magnitude would undoubtedly be reported as breaking news globally.
  • Content contextualization: UN reports from the specified period (March 3, 2026) focused solely on expressing grave concern over an attack on a school in Minab, Iran. While the UN warned that targeting civilians could constitute war crimes, there was no mention of President Trump as a designated criminal.

Impacts of the malinformation

  • Fueling political polarization: The post garnered over 31,000 likes and sparked intense debates in the comments, further escalating global political tensions.
  • Distorting the perception of international organizations: The specific claim of a “12-3 vote” misleads the public into believing an official consensus was reached, thereby undermining the integrity and perceived authority of international justice systems.
  • Inciting excessive public alarm: The fake information could lead to a widespread misunderstanding that the world is entering a full-scale conflict where international law has immediate, punitive jurisdiction over global leaders.

Recommended Response

  • Verify the original source: If a UN resolution is cited, always cross-check with the official website (un.org) or UN News directly. If the information does not appear on these platforms, it should be presumed false.
  • Monitor credible news outlets: Significant UN resolutions of this magnitude would be reported immediately by reputable agencies such as Reuters, AP or Thai PBS. If a report is only circulating on social media, treat it with extreme skepticism.
  • Utilize fact-checking tools: Search for the headline on international fact-checking platforms to see if it has already been debunked.
  • Don’t support the misinformation cycle: Refrain from liking, sharing, or commenting on posts that are clearly fraudulent. This helps limit the social media algorithm’s ability to further amplify the content.
