Thai PBS Verify identified a post from the X account ‘PLA Military Updates,’ which shared a video of the Indian Army Chief stating that:

“JUST IN: India officially confesses it backstabbed Iran and shared the location of an Iranian ship with Israel. Indian Army Chief explains how he gave the Israelis the exact location of the Iranian Navy ship and how it was targeted Aren’t they ashamed?”

The post garnered 15,900 views, 674 reactions, and 72 comments.

In the video, General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff of India, appears to state:

“We are navigating to monitor the situation in Iran. Israel is our maritime ally. It is unfortunate that the Iranian naval vessel sank, but the incident occurred in international waters. As long as Iranian ships remain within Indian waters, they will be protected. However, once they cross into international waters As a strategic ally of Israel, it is our duty to provide them with the coordinates of these [Iranian] vessels as part of a new strategic agreement. Therefore, it is a misunderstanding to believe that the Iranian naval ship was destroyed within Indian territory; rather, Israel conducted its own mission in international waters. While we share our intelligence regarding their positions with Israel, we have no involvement in the US-Israeli torpedo attacks. They carried out those operations independently.

“This is Iran’s war, and India remains uninvolved. Our focus is on Pakistan, and Israel will help us achieve our objectives there. We are grateful to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for assisting us in securing permission to import Russian oil.”

The viral video featuring the Indian Army Chief is a deepfake

Thai PBS Verify analyzed the footage using two AI detection tools, Hive Moderation and AI Video Detector, and confirmed that the video was AI-generated.

Furthermore, Thai PBS Verify performed a keyword search with ‘India’s Army Chief’ and discovered a YouTube video titled ‘India’s Army Chief Speaks on Op Sindoor, Pakistan and Future of Warfare | Raisina Dialogue 2026,’ published on March 7, 2026. The video features General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Indian Army Staff, discussing the strategic adaptation of the military in the evolving landscape of modern warfare.

He drew key lessons from ‘Operation Sindhur’ to emphasize the necessity of building credible deterrence and integrating advanced technologies—such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and cyber warfare—into agile, small-scale combat units. The General also highlighted the role of military diplomacy in elevating India’s global standing, alongside the military’s involvement in economic and infrastructure development in border areas. Additionally, he analyzed various security challenges, including strained relations with Pakistan and China, which necessitate constant vigilance to prevent future tactical surprises.

It was confirmed that the actual footage contains no references to Iran or Israel, contrary to the claims made in the viral clip.

What is the truth?

Thai PBS Verify has investigated the viral video claiming that General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff of India, admitted to have shared Iranian ship coordinates for Israeli strikes. The claim is false and classified as fake news. Using verification tools such as Hive Moderation and AI Video Detector, the investigation yielded consistent results: both the visuals and audio in the clip were generated by AI.

In addition, an investigation using Google Lens revealed that the footage features a photo of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shaking hands with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a press conference in Jerusalem, held on February 26, 2026.

The original footage actually depicts the Indian Army Chief sharing insights on ‘Operation Sindhur’ and the military’s modernization. He advocates for the use of AI and robotics in defense reforms and underscores how military diplomacy can elevate both security and economic stability.

Verification Process

  3. Keyword search: A targeted search revealed that the authentic footage features the Indian Army Chief sharing insights from ‘Operation Sindhur’ to accelerate military reforms through AI and robotics. He emphasized the role of military diplomacy in strengthening national security and the border economy amidst tensions with Pakistan and China. The military’s focus remains on building credible deterrence and agile, small-scale combat units to address modern warfare and prevent tactical surprises. Crucially, the investigation confirmed that the original video makes no mention of Iran or Israel whatsoever.
