บู คือ ความเชื่อดั้งเดิมของชาวมองโกเลีย ซึ่งมีวิถีชีวิตแบบเร่ร่อนเลี้ยงสัตว์ไปตามทุ่งหญ้าต่าง ๆ หมายถึง คนทรงที่สามารถติดต่อและเป็นร่างทรงให้แก่บรรพบุรุษของครอบครัวได้ มีไว้เพื่อปรึกษาและช่วยเหลือแก้ไขปัญหา โดยเฉพาะเป็นสื่อกลางวอนขอเทพเจ้าให้ฤดูกาลทางธรรมชาติเป็นไปอย่างราบรื่น เพราะส่งผลกับคนเลี้ยงสัตว์มากที่สุด
ภายใต้หน้ากากลึกลับและชุดอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ที่ดูแปลกตา บูเคยถูกกวาดล้างไปภายใต้การปกครองของสหภาพโซเวียตมาแล้วครั้งหนึ่ง ก่อนที่จะถูกรื้อฟื้นอีกครั้งในช่วงทศวรรษที่ผ่านมา การกลับมาครั้งนี้แม้จะไม่ถูกปฏิวัติซ้ำ แต่พวกเขากำลังเผชิญกับแรงกดดันมหาศาล จากพายุแห่ง ‘กาลสมัย’ และการตีตราจากสังคมสมัยใหม่
THE CHANGING VOICES OF "BÖÖ"
Mongolian shamanism known as ‘böö’ is based on folk religion traditionally tied to all aspects of nomadic societal organisation and tribal ways of life. The böö refers to a shaman who serves as a channel through which the family’s ancestral spirits can be contacted. Through the böö, the families seek out advice and solutions to their problems as communicated by their ancestors. The böö is a medium through which prayers are offered to the gods for “the natural forces”to be kind to nomadic herders.
Underneath the strange-looking mask and dress of great mystery, the böö was once wiped out under Soviet communist rule. It was only during the past decade that the böö has been revived.
But, this return of the böö is suffering yet “another wave of discrimination”. The enormous pressure this time around comes in the form of a storm dictated by “the ‘social clock,’ in which the böö is now being “subjected to branding”…by a contemporary society.
