ดีบุกเคยเป็นทรัพยากรสำคัญที่หล่อเลี้ยงชีวิตผู้คนตลอดแหลมมลายู ทว่าหลังยุคเหมืองเสื่อมลง ความทรงจำของเมืองบนเส้นทางสายแร่ดีบุกแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ก็ค่อยๆ เลือนหายไป การรื้อฟื้นมรดกจากแร่ล้ำค่านี้ได้กลับมาอีกครั้งผ่านการย้อนมองรากของชุมชนที่ตำบลหงาว จังหวัดระนอง โดยทีมนักวิจัยร่วมกับชาวบ้านเปิดคลังความทรงจำ ฟื้นเรื่องราววิถี และทักษะของชาวเหมืองที่เคยสร้างเมืองขึ้นมา
นักวิจัยยังออกเดินทางต่อไปเพื่อเชื่อมโยงเส้นทางเมืองดีบุกในมาเลเซียและอินโดนีเซีย เพื่อเรียนรู้จากนักอนุรักษ์ของแต่ละเมืองเพื่อตามหาคำตอบที่ว่าเมืองเก่าที่เติบโตจากเหมืองแร่จะมีการอนุรักษ์ได้อย่างยั่งยืนท่ามกลางความเปลี่ยนแปลงของยุคสมัยได้อย่างไร
THE MINES THAT BUILT CITIES; PART 4: REVIVAL AND RESTORATION
There was a point in history when tin was the resource that “built lives” throughout the length of the Malay Peninsula. But, then, there came a time when “the tin mining era” fell into serious decline. The stories carried along the Southeast Asian Tin Belt by the locals inhabiting it “slowly faded” with people’s memories and the passage of time. Today, the tin mining heritage is being revived through “the reconsideration of the roots” of the Ngao community in Ranong Province. Research teams along with the locals are opening “a treasure trove of memories” in order to revive “the ways of life and skillsets” of the tin miners who had previously built entire towns and cities.
The researchers then travel on to “interlink the landscape remains” in the tin mining towns of Malaysia and Indonesia. They are on a mission to learn from the local conservationists “the sustainable ways and means” of preserving old tin mining towns…in these “ever changing times”.
