In a world where many people see the pigeon as a dirty, annoying animal…the region of Anatolia in eastern Türkiye is home to “pigeon keepers” who have elevated the pigeon into “an object of love and faith”. The pigeon has become a deeply rooted way of life, and part of a cultural heritage that has been inherited through the generations.
Türkiye is a country where the pigeon isn’t just a pet. The pigeon has been placed at the heart of folk traditions that have grown into “a business industry”, ranging from auction markets held through the night to international racing fields that set “the stage of honor” for bird keepers. These are people who devote their energy, time, heart and soul “to a small bird”. Even with the possibility that their bird may fly away one day, the bird is “still their best friend” that understand them… “without having to use any words”.
